NAME
  asa - Interprets carriage-control characters

SYNOPSIS
  asa [file ...]

FLAGS
  [XPG4-UNIX]  None

PARAMETERS
  file	   [XPG4-UNIX]	The pathname of a file to be read.  If this parameter
	   is omitted, standard input is read.

DESCRIPTION
  [XPG4-UNIX]  The asa command writes its input files to standard output,
  mapping carriage-control characters from the text files to line-printer
  control sequences.

  [XPG4-UNIX]  The first character of every input line is removed and,
  depending on the character removed, an action performed on that character
  and the rest of the line.  If the character removed is:

  space	  [XPG4-UNIX]  The rest of the line is output without change.

  0	  [XPG4-UNIX]  A newline character is output, followed by the rest of
	  the input line.

  1	  [XPG4-UNIX]  A form-feed character is output, followed by the rest
	  of the input line.

  +	  [XPG4-UNIX]  The newline character of the previous line is replaced
	  with a carriage-return character, which is output, followed by the
	  rest of the input line. If + is the first character in the input, +
	  has the same effect as the space character.

  other	  [Digital]  The character is output, followed by the rest of the
	  input line.

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
  The following environment variables affect the execution of asa:

  LANG	   [XPG4-UNIX]	Provides a default value for the internationalization
	   variables that are unset or null. If LANG is unset or null, the
	   corresponding value from the default locale is used. If any of the
	   internationalization variables contain an invalid setting, the
	   utility behaves as if none of the variables had been defined.

  LC_ALL   [XPG4-UNIX]	If set to a non-empty string value, overrides the
	   values of all the other internationalization variables.

  LC_CTYPE [XPG4-UNIX]	Determines the locale for the interpretation of
	   sequences of bytes of text data as characters (for example,
	   single-byte as opposed to multi-byte characters in arguments and
	   input files).

  LC_MESSAGES
	   [XPG4-UNIX]	Determines the locale for the format and contents of
	   diagnostic messages written to standard error.

  NLSPATH  [XPG4-UNIX]	Determines the location of message catalogues for the
	   processing of LC_MESSAGES.

EXAMPLES
   1.  To view a file (created by a program using FORTRAN-style carriage
       control characters) on a terminal:


	    asa file

   2.  To format the FORTRAN output of a.out and direct it to the printer:


	    a.out | asa | lp

EXIT VALUES
  The following exit values are returned:

  0   [XPG4-UNIX]  Successful completion

  >0  [XPG4-UNIX]  An error occurred
